Running in 25°F Weather

Extreme cold requires serious layering. Here's exactly what to wear for 25-degree runs.

What to Wear

Upper Body

  • Thermal Base Layer: Moisture-wicking merino wool or synthetic
  • Fleece Mid-Layer: Lightweight fleece for insulation
  • Insulated Jacket: Wind and water-resistant outer shell

Lower Body

  • Heavyweight Tights: Thermal running tights or double-layer
  • Wool Socks: Merino wool running socks

Accessories (Critical)

  • Winter Gloves: Insulated running gloves or mittens
  • Balaclava or Face Mask: Protect face and neck from frostbite
  • Warm Hat or Headband: Cover ears completely

Cold Weather Tips

  • Start into the wind so you finish with it at your back
  • Warm up indoors before heading out
  • Stay hydrated — cold air is very dry
  • Watch for ice, especially in shaded areas
  • Apply petroleum jelly to exposed skin
  • Know the signs of frostbite: numbness, white/pale skin

Safety First

At 25°F, frostbite risk is real, especially with wind. Check the wind chill before heading out. If it's below 15°F with wind, consider a treadmill run or cross-training indoors. Always tell someone your route and expected return time.
